Organizations, like people, have their own distinct character. At the Centers, the things we do and how we do them are based on our history, our shared values, and our vision of the future.

Dr. Franziska W. Racker served as medical director from 1971 until her death in 1999. Her 28 years of service was a period of great change at The Special Children's Center. She was a trusted friend, a compassionate leader, and a champion of human rights.

She cared passionately about people. She knew human services are not about programs and budgets, but are about individuals, families, staff members, friends, and community. Dr. Racker helped the agency stay focused on its mission as The Special Children's Center evolved.

The organization has changed in many ways throughout its history, from serving children to serving people of all ages, from one service to many, through several name changes. There have also been constants. A major one, which Dr. Racker lived for us each day, was respect for and dedication to the importance of each individual. The Centers proudly carries on in her spirit.
