Roger Sibley, long-time Leader at Franziska Racker Centers Announces his Retirement

Franziska Racker Centers announces that Roger Sibley will retire as Executive Director at the end of the year. Sibley has been at the helm of the agency that serves individuals with disabilities and their families throughout Cortland, Tompkins and Tioga counties for over thirty-three years.

Roger Sibley, Executive Director

Sibley began his career in the human services field in the late 1960’s. In 1979 he accepted the role of Executive Director of The Special Children’s Center. At that time the agency operated two sites with a staff of approximately 35 employees. The agency has seen a lot of change over the last thirty-three years, including the name change to Franziska Racker Centers in memory of Dr. Franziska Racker, the opening of two additional preschool sites, development of more than twenty residential homes and expansion of Community Supports and Mental Health Services. The Centers now serve 3,000 individuals and their families annually, employs over 700 people and operates a budget of $27 million.

“It is with a profound debt of gratitude that the Board of Directors has accepted Roger’s announcement. Roger has been a visionary in this organization and in the community. He has carefully nurtured a culture of inclusion that is at the heart of the many programs and talented staff at Franziska Racker Centers. He will truly be missed.” states Howard Schler, President of the Board of Directors. “We knew the day would come when Roger would need to move on to new unexplored parts of his life. Having planned for this, we are thrilled to announce that Dan Brown, Associate Executive Director, has accepted our offer to become the agency’s new Executive Director effective January 1st. Based on his extensive knowledge, devotion to our mission and his history with our organization and culture, we know that he is precisely the right person for the position. We’ve been working with Roger, Dan and the senior management to make the transition go smoothly for everyone across the agency, including the many individuals and families served.  We are very excited looking towards our future with Dan”.

In addition to his career at Racker Centers, Sibley has been an active leader in the non-profit community in Tompkins County and Central New York. He chaired the 2001 Tompkins County United Way Campaign, served as Chairman of the Board in 2007-2008, and continues as a United Way volunteer. Sibley has volunteered on the board of various other community organizations including the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce, Family Reading Partnership, Kendall, the Drug and Alcohol Council, the Kitchen Theatre, and many others. Within his professional role at Racker Centers, he has worked tirelessly to promote strength-based services, supports and opportunities for people with disabilities in our community, and has never hesitated to declare that the most important goal of all is to “change the world” helping society change the way it views people with disabilities.

Dan Brown has been with Racker Centers for over twelve years, beginning with his service as a board member from 1995–2000, eventually becoming president of the Board of Directors. He joined the agency in 2000 as the Director of Finance, and became the Associate Executive Director in 2002. Brown is fully engaged in every aspect of The Centers, from program to finance to completing the “Making Room” Campaign. “I am honored and excited to have this opportunity. My journey down this road started twelve years ago when Roger offered me a position at The Centers. Since that time Roger has encouraged my successes and when needed, gently redirected my efforts. Roger’s mentoring has put me in this truly enviable position. I am nervous about the large shoes to fill, but know his valuable input is only a short drive or phone call away.” states Brown.

The community is invited to celebrate and honor Sibley’s years of service at a retirement party on December 1, 2012 at Franziska Racker Centers in the Roger R. Sibley Conference Room, 3226 Wilkins Road, Ithaca, NY from 11:00a.m.-2:00p.m.
